NEWS & ANNOUCEMENTS

Government Affairs Update - December 16, 2011

All of us at the Tucson Association of REALTORS® wish you and your loved ones all the best during this holiday season.

City of Tucson:
Mayor and Council approved a land use code amendment on Tuesday governing development in a critical section of the modern streetcar route on the west side of the University of Arizona.  This code amendment will allow commercial development mixed along neighborhoods.  It will drive the increased business opportunities and sales taxes that the streetcar is projected to generate.  This is a good step in the right direction for our community.

In other news, the Mayor and Council will continue to work on refinements to the “water for annexation” policy of Tucson Water.  After nearly a year of review, there are several recommendations that will be moving forward for consideration in February of 2012.  We have been actively working to improve this policy. It could have profound impacts on future development opportunities in our region that may have expected but can no longer rely on availability of Tucson water.

Town of Marana:
We will be meeting with the Town of Marana later this month to discuss the recent increased enforcement of the sign code with regard to open house signs.  The current code is largely REALTOR® friendly.  Much of the enforcement is over signs illegally placed in the right of way.  The code currently requires signs to be at least three feet away from all sidewalks and five feet away from public right of ways.  We will be trying to find solutions to more easily identify the public right of ways.
